Weekend 5+1 – 5 Things I Love + 1 Thing I Don’t – 8.20.21

I’ve been so mired down in the kitchen remodel, that I haven’t shared a 5+1 in awhile, so let’s get one in before school starts.  As always, summer has flown by, although this year I’m really looking forward to fall.  It’s going to be a really fun holiday decorating season!  This post contains some affiliate links.

For the Love of Kitchens (a deVol Kitchens show on the Magnolia Network)

I don’t know if you have the Discovery+ streaming channel, but I do, and I love it.  It’s pretty much a one stop shop for me and the shows that I like to watch.  From HGTV, to my embarrassing trash tv (i.e., 90 Day Fiance).  But the Magnolia Network has some really amazing shows popping up that are worth sharing.  In particular, For the Love of Kitchens.  I’ve been a huge fan of deVol Kitchens for awhile now, and to have the chance to see their process behind the scenes is so much fun.  Their entire team is full of true master craftsmen/women.

What’s even more interesting, is to see the wide swath of kitchens that they design.  You go from a legit castle, to a cute, small kitchen, packed with style.  They run the gamut, and it’s nice to see that having a deVol kitchen is attainable at any level, not just the castle level.

The narration around it reminds me a bit of The Great British Baking Show, which I love, so that probably gives it extra points on a subconscious level for me as well.  But it’s amazing.  I love seeing real people, masters of their trades, creating unique, one of a kind spaces.

2021 Friends Advent Calendar

Speaking of the holidays, I’m thinking I might need to grab one of these Friends Advent Calendars for my older sons – they are fans of Friends and I still hear the watching it in the basement sometimes.  It’s fun to see them enjoy shows that we loved so much.

Mary Jane

This book was a fun read for me, particularly since it’s a coming of age story that takes place in the 70’s.  While the main character is older than me, I loved listening to this book and reminiscing about what life was like during that era. Mary Jane is a nanny for a five year old girl in a home that is much different than her own.  The husband is a psychiatrist, and has a rock star and his actor wife (who remind me of Sonny and Cher) come and live with them as he guides him through recovery from drug addiction. Mary Jane is a sweet book, great story and a fun premise.

Cook’s Illustrated

Having a kitchen that’s out of commission for months has given me a new lease on life when it comes to cooking.  I seriously can’t wait to get into this kitchen and start cooking again.  That said, I have resubscribed to Cook’s Illustrated – a magazine that has always inspired me to cook, because their recipes are so well done.  They research and write about the best ways to cook different dishes, and come up with “the best” way to make the dish at hand.  I’m raring to go, and even subscribed to their website so I have access to their full library of recipes.  Can’t wait.

At one point, I even made artwork out of their magazines – they’re just as pretty as their recipes.

CODA Movie

CODA stands for Child of Deaf Adults, and that’s exactly what this movie is about.  Ruby, is the 17 year-old and only hearing person in her family.  Her parents and her brother are deaf, and she often serves as a translator between the two worlds.  It’s sweet, funny, endearing and insightful.  I loved it, and highly recommend it.

My +1 for the week – Delays

The kitchen is so close to being done, and my fridge continues to get further and further out of reach.  I know that this is a major first world problem, and I acknowledge that completely.  It’s kind of ironic that our appliances were the first thing we ordered in this process.  We ordered them right around March 1st – plenty of time for our remodeling plans.  Our fridge went from a 16 week wait, to 18 weeks, to August 28th, to early September, and at last check, I’ve been told it’s “backordered” and don’t even have a date.  It feels like I’m being strung along, even though I know this is just the world we live in right now.  The good news is that my range goes in on Wednesday, and I can’t wait to cook dinner with it, and bake a yummy dessert!

Here’s to a productive week ahead!

Jenny
