One Room Challenge Week 4: Cast Your Vote!

Hello!

My daughter’s room is moving forward, little by little, yet it seems like things are always one step forward, two steps back.  Why is it always that the focal point of the room is the piece that gives me the most headaches?  Never fails.

In case you need a refresh for the progress so far, you can see it all here:

For the spring edition of the One Room Challenge, I tackled my master bathroom, and got hung up on paint for the vanity – kind of a big part of the room.  For this edition, it’s all about the bedding.

On the upside, I did get the room painted, and my daughter is thrilled with it.  I was finishing up when she came home from school, so it was a nice surprise for her.  We went with Balboa Mist, by Benjamin Moore.

A big thank you to Purdy for providing me with some great painting supplies for this project.   My old roller frame was looking pretty rusty and paint crusty, so Purdy’s Revolution Frame does the trick!  And you know I’m a paint brush hoarder, and I love using an angled brush, so their XL Cub is a great one to have in my toolbox.

Her desk area is starting to come together too:

Quite an improvement from where we began, don’t you think?

Like I mentioned, the sticking point for the room has been the bedding.  Since the beginning, I just haven’t been able to find what I want.  Last week I mentioned that I had found some blankets that I thought would work to bring in some of the color I’m looking for, and I was particularly jazzed about this one from AllModern:

So, I bit the bullet and ordered it, and paid extra for “two day shipping” since it showed that it shipped in 1-2 weeks- yet my delivery date was still showing as early November.  What the?  Apparently, their idea of “two day shipping” is that I get it two days after it ships.  But it ships in 1-2 weeks.  Huh?  Yeah, makes NO sense, and I had words with their customer service department.  But then, it showed up yesterday.  Go figure.

I should also mention that I went into a bit of a panic at the late shipping issue, so I went on the hunt at Pottery Barn Outlet for an alternative blanket, in case this one didn’t work.  Plus, the colors for the nightstand that I’m redoing are going to be based upon this stupid blanket.

Long story short, here are the blankets that I have.

I thought they were going to be two totally different colors, and in reality, they’re more similar than they are different.  The colors in the Pottery Barn throw on the left are probably a little more muted.

So, we have Option A:

Or Option B:

The bummer part of these throw blankets is that they don’t work with the Euro shams that I bought.  The shams are a deeper shade of pink (that I thought was going to match with the throw from AllModern).  But, that’s fixable – I think.  But I really liked them (and they were a total steal too).

What do you think?  A or B?

I still have to paint the nightstand, and have the paint thanks to Velvet Finishes – I’m excited to put it to work!  You may remember my inspiration pieceperfection.

We’re headed out of town for a couple of days and I’m hoping to recruit my mom’s mad sewing skills while we’re gone (and they’re watching the kids) to make/embellish my curtains.  They should be pretty straight forward (for her, anyway).  And I’m also going to add some bamboo shades.  Something like this one –

I would like curtains that are in this pretty shade of aqua from my fabric scouting trip –

But then I see curtains like these, and think maybe I should just buy them off the rack and save myself some trouble. But that’s just not how I roll.  I prefer to make things difficult and drive myself crazy in the process.

But then, you run into the same situation that I did with the blankets – you never know what you’re going to get.

Let’s see, what all do I have left to do?

  • Install shelves
  • Buy a dresser
  • Paint Pottery Barn Outlet mirror
  • Buy and install bamboo shades
  • Make and install drapes
  • Paint nightstand
  • Add accessories

Overall, I’m pretty happy with this week’s progress, but there is still a lot to do!  I suspect it’s going to come down to the wire – it always does.

Take a look at all of the great progress that’s going on!

Thanks Cassie – I am too. Now I'm finding ways to add touches of aqua. 🙂

I think if you are going softer on the windows then a punch of colour at the end of the bed would definitely be the focal point. If you went softer the room would definitely feel more serene. I gravitate towards bold. Anyway you can keep them both – bold for summer, muted for winter?

I'm torn – I wish the bold one was more in the colors that I was expecting. I'm going to make it work – somehow…

I love the Balboa Mist and white trim with the punch of color you are going for in here, it's a beautiful combination! I can't decide which blanket I like better, what does the client have to say on that?

The client likes both blankets – but I think likes the bold a bit better. I'm leaning toward muted, because it works a little better with the other colors/fabrics I'm bringing into the room. I have recruited my mom to make curtains – woohoo!!

Oooh B!! And those pom curtains are adorable. I hear you on the "rather make it," I lost my mind and I'm making a freaking table 😉 Honestly you just can't go wrong with this pretty room!

Thanks so much Andrea! I have officially recruited my mom on the curtains – I know she'll make them great. She's awesome with the sewing machine (unlike me!).

I am going to say A! I think it totally works with the Euro shams, as the other competes with them. That blanket pulls out the softer colors, yet the throw pillow the darker such as the shams so it totally works. Can't wait to see what you decide regarding the curtains.

I'm leaning towards A too, I just wish that second blanket had been in the colors I had been expecting! I have recruited my mom to make the curtains, and she's on board. Now we're debating about pom pom fringe vs. a contrasting fabric border. Decisions, decisions!

I like both but lean towards A, maybe because it seems a bit more muted but also maybe you won't grow sick of it as quickly? Hard to say because they both really look good. I would ask your daughter what her preference is. I like the wall color, it looks so pretty! good luck, it's getting down to the wire!

It IS getting down to the wire! I'm leaning towards muted colors because they work with the other colors and fabrics that I'm bringing in to the room. I love the paint color too – it's a game changer!

Thanks Mara, that's what I'm leaning toward too. It just seems to work better with the other fabrics that I'm bring into the room. Hopefully the vision in my head will come together!

I say B is it. A just kind of seems so bland or is lacking something…pizzazz, I would say. Anyway, my vote is for B.

I hear you – I just wish the colors were "right". In the photo online they were. In person, notsomuch. And it is practically IMPOSSIBLE to find a blanket with the right shades of hot pink and orange. I've looked. Everywhere. And the clock is ticking!

Looks great Jenny! That wall with the desk is definitely a huge change! I like option "A" best – maybe you can use the blanket you don't use to make throw pillows 🙂 Glad to meet more people participating in this challenge!
