Friday 5+1 (5 Things I Love + 1 Thing I Don’t) – 8.16.19

As we head into a new school year, I am definitely overdue for a Friday 5+1!  My house is a staging area for all things college right now, and I’m bracing myself for a quiet and clean house in the coming weeks.  I’m looking forward to the clean, but I’m ambivalent about the quiet.  I’m going to miss the herds of boys that come and go daily and eat me out of house and home.  But, it’s all good things, right?  That’s what I keep telling myself anyway…  This post contains some affiliate links.

Ziploc Jumbo Totes

I think I shared these before, but they’re worth sharing again, because my junior in college still has the ones he used freshman year.  They are an awesome way to pack up clothes/towels/crap and then fold them away for easy storage.  And you can put a lot of stuff in these things.  I ordered some more since my middle son is headed to college next week too.  And then my oldest grabbed a couple of them.  They’re that good.

Crown and Paw

So, my soon-to-be freshman in college showed me the Crown and Paw website and wants one of these so bad.  What a fun gift for a college kid, whether it’s when they head to school (or maybe for Christmas).  I could totally see our older dog in one of these – he’s definitely more dignified…

Cool Command Hooks

I use Command Hooks in my home quite a bit – for Christmas wreaths, a place to hang a towel on a tile wall in the shower, for garland on my fireplace, etc…  But when we were school shopping, I stumbled upon some really cool looking Command Hooks that take their game to a whole new level.

Quick and Easy Homemade Bread

Back in June, where it rained for what seemed to be, weeks, I got the urge to bake homemade bread.  But I needed it to be quick, because we all know that I’m not always the best when it comes to planning.  Enter this quick, easy and delicious homemade bread recipe from My Mundane and Miraculous Life. Tuck it away for cooler days.  You can thank me later.

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry

I’ve been on a summer audiobook binge, and honestly, many of the books seem to run together.  But I did want to share My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry.  It’s a heartening story that centers around the relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter.  It’s one where the grandmother helps her young granddaughter navigate her way through life after the grandmother dies.  And in the process, you learn about the grandmother’s life, her triumphs, regrets and wishes.  It’s a great story worth a share.

My +1 for the week – Missing Forks

When my kids were little, we went through a “missing spoons” phase, where I think spoons were accidentally thrown in the trash by little kidlets that were trying to be helpful by throwing away their yogurt, pudding, etc…  However, now I’m having a similar dilemma with forks.  They have gone MIA, and the only ones I typically find in my silverware drawer are the short little dessert forks that no one wants to use.  I even bought more of them a few months ago.  I have no idea where they are, but can only hope that they will surface once the boys go to college.  I just don’t get it.

Have an awesome weekend!!

Jenny

I have a good story about missing forks. Several years ago I noticed pieces missing from my Towle stainless flatware. I went on eBay to get replacements and discovered the pattern was discontinued and much in demand. Instead of buying more, I sold what I had and bought some cheapo stuff. I made about 600.00! Top price was about 35.00 for a teaspoon!

Jenny I always love your 5+1 posts, and can relate to a few of these today in particular! The jumbo totes – I have to get a few of those!! Our house is piled high with back-to-college stuff right now too. I think I’ll need to make a batch of that amazing looking bread when the kids go back and the house is dreadfully quiet! Hope your three have a great year at school. xx

I can so relate to the missing spoons and forks! I hope yours resurface — mine never did — and — it happened way before college. I think they all accidentally were tossed in the trash as they were learning to clean their own plates and bring them to the sink. Memories — Right? lol

That’s exactly it Genny! I’m going to have to break down and buy MORE forks. I’m waiting until the boys are both at school though. Don’t want to risk more missing forks!

I am laughing reading about the spoons. I have had that same problem. It is a mystery isn’t it?
