Friday 5+1 (5 Thing I Love + 1 Thing I Don’t) – 12.29.17

Here we are at the end of another year, making this the last Friday 5+1 of 2017!  I have to tell you, writing this series has made me pay closer attention to things that catch my eye (or drive me crazy).  Overall, I think it’s been a good thing, as I’ve learned and discovered a lot myself in doing them.  Besides, looking for fun, cool and interesting things is a nice hobby, right?  If you ever come across something that catches your eye and you think is worthy of a share, I’d love to hear about it!  This post contains some affiliate links.

Ziprunner

I’m already a fan of the Zipwall, and have used it in my own home when painting my kitchen cabinets, and on job sites while doing customer spray cabinet jobs.  They’re a great product, and excellent for containing overspray, or even drywall dust while construction work is being done.  The Ziprunner serves as a great flooring protection when painting, as it prevents spills from seeping through to the carpet/floor underneath.  But you can also throw it in your car and utilize it as an extra protection barrier.  This would have come in exceedingly handy when my son drove my car, and primer spilled in the back.  Adding to my supply list…

Sh*t My Dad Says

The title of this book basically says it all.  I gave Sh*t My Dad Says to my husband for Christmas (but not without first reading portions of it myself and laughing out loud in the process).  I remember reading about the Twitter feed that preceded this book (where a guy basically just tweeted out sh*t his dad said), but just discovered the book at the bookstore.  If you’re not easily offended by swear words, and appreciate dad-humor, you’ll love this book as much as I do.

A sample: “Pick your furniture like you pick a wife; it should make you feel comfortable and look nice, but not so nice that if someone walks past it they want to steal it.”

Luminara Birch Candles

I have loved the Luminara flameless candles since the moment I discovered them because they look so real, but they are in fact, flameless.  I first spotted one in a local shop, under a cloche, and for a second I thought to myself, “That can’t be safe, having a candle under a glass dome.”  They look that real.

Given that birch wrapped items are all the rage, I couldn’t help but share the Luminara Birch Candles, after spotting them in a store.

Famous Dave’s Cornbread Mix

One of my girlfriends in my monthly bunco group had Famous Dave’s cornbread when it was her turn to host back in November.  This cornbread is the bomb!  A nice change from my usual Jiffy brand cornbread (I still love you Jiffy), but this cornbread is moist (I hate that word, so you know it must be good if I’m putting it in print) and hearty.  We had it the other night with some chili – good stuff!

Oscillococcinum

My friend Cyndy at The Creativity Exchange shared this flu remedy, and I went out and bought it since the Man Flu hit our house. Oscillococcinum supposed to act as an over-the-counter version of Tamiflu, so I have the family sized version in our medicine cabinet as an insurance policy.  After having the flu a few years ago, I don’t want to mess with it again.

My +1 for the week – Forgetting about Christmas presents that I purchased

It’s official.  I’ve turned into my mother.  I never understood how she could forget about Christmas presents that she had hidden around the house, only to whip them out after the festivities were over, or sometimes, telling us that she knew she had another gift, but couldn’t remember where it was.  I don’t even stash my gifts all over the house, so I have no excuse for forgetting where I put things.  I just stuffed them away… and forgot.  I did buy them early in my gift buying process, if that helps explain my plight.

Anyone else?

Have an awesome Friday and a safe holiday weekend!

Jenny

Anything that makes painting/clean up easier is a win in my book. And yes, the oscillococcinum does work! And yes, I have been “that” person who puts a gift somewhere to find it later.
When my oldest was younger she asked for a watch for her birthday one year (January 3rd). I asked her why? as we had just given her one for Christmas. To which replied no you didn’t. Yeah, found it a couple days later on a shelf in our closet :-0

If you haven’t seen Popsockets yet, stop at Target. They are awesome little retractable handles for your phone. Highly recommend!

My daughter is obsessed with Popsockets! I always attach my phone to a magnet thing in my car, and I’m afraid the Popsocket wouldn’t let me do that anymore!

My mom always forgot a gift as well! I haven’t done it yet, but I am sure it will happen one of these days!

    I really enjoy your blog!

I love your Friday 5 + 1 posts! It’s always fun to read, and I’ve found some new things to love and try too. I’ve been using luminara type candles ever since I discovered them, and the ones with built in timers are just the best! Thanks for all the great ideas this past year and wishing you all the best in the new year.

Lol! I’ve forgotten where I’ve hidden presents more times than I can count. This year it was the new Taylor Swift CD. It was the present i bought first too!

I think it’s related to purchasing presents early – the one I forgot about was an early purchase too! See, preparing doesn’t do me any good in the long run! 😉

I love your Friday 5+1. I feel so on trend, telling friends and family about new things I’ve read here. I have been forgetting presents for years (you are a bit younger than me). I remember my grandma used to hide her jewelry before they traveled, and come home and not remember where it was, and I’m not proud to say that I have done the same thing! Apparently, she did the same thing with cash, because they found more than $1000 in her room tucked here and there after her death-trying not to repeat that!

I’m willing to bet that my mother has money stashed around the house that she forgot about too. Thanks so much for reading my blog and Happy New Year!

Reading the comments on forgetting about stashing gifts totally hit the mark with me. I was recalling a time when t put Christmas gifts inside our luggage (seemed like SUCH a great idea at the time) only to discover them when packing for spring break in March. Ooops! I’m also guilty of hiding jewelry and coin jars before leaving for vacation and not remembering where I “hid” them. A friend told me a great trick that has saved my sanity where you take a picture on your phone of that special spot or where you hide your Christmas presents. Then you can scroll your picture feed and not waste time and $$$ buying repeat gifts and/or searching for your hiding spot.
Love your blog, Jenny! Thanks for the laughs and keeping things real. Happy 2018 to you and your family!

We left a big pile of our youngest’s gifts in the basement. She’s only 3 so slipping them under the tree with her right there and our older 3 cracking up was hilarious!

That’s hysterical! Even just this morning I found some Reese’s Cup candy candy things that were supposed to go in the stockings!! My brain has turned into oatmeal over the holiday break!

I will never admit I am becoming like my mother but this Christmas was the first time
I forgot to wrap a present and put it under the tree.
I blanked out the Red Dwarf boxed set videos because they fit in my dresser drawer.
If I’m not tripping over it in the dining room then it is out of sight, out of mind.
My husband was sweet about it, though. He said it was an extra day of presents. Nice save!

Presents after The Big Day are kind of fun. #winning I found Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup candy cane things that were supposed to go in the stockings. Found them TODAY. So I guess we’re both #winning, right? 😉
