Dresser Transformed with Amy Howard’s One Step Paint

Hello!

I mentioned here that I had the opportunity to visit and meet Amy Howard late last year to learn more about her new line of paint and finishing products, and I’m excited to share my first project with you today.  I have been on a big time furniture painting kick lately, and I think you’ll be as amazed as amazed as I am with how this thrift store dresser was transformed with Amy Howard’s One Step Paint.  I am in love with the finished look, and find myself always looking for more furniture pieces to restore as a result.  This post contains some affiliate links.

Let’s start with this little lady who is rock solid and just in need of a little TLC.  Great bones, solid wood, made by Thomasville.  I think my heart skipped a beat when I spotted it.

Choosing a Color

While Amy Howard’s paint line offers a variety of great colors, I stumbled upon this image on Pinterest of a gorgeous bookcase that had been painted in a mix of two of Amy’s paint colors – Black and Atelier.  When I saw this, I knew I had found my match.  How can you not love this, right?

Amy Howard Color Mixing

So, that was my plan.  When I attended Amy’s blogger workshop, she showed us a variety of their products and techniques, and I was excited to learn that her paint could be sprayed.  You know me, and how much I love the smooth finish of paint when it’s sprayed, and I figured this would be a good way to get my feet wet in using her paint for the first time.

I cleaned the dresser with Krud Kutter and even though Amy’s One Step Paint doesn’t require sanding, I sanded anyway to make sure I didn’t miss any extra dirt or grime.  I’ve become a bit of a sanding nut now that I have a great sander.  It doesn’t feel like work anymore.  Plus, I had to do a little bit of repair work on the top.  While it was fine when I bought it, it sustained a little bit of damage somewhere in the transport process.  This is where Minwax High Performance Wood Filler is your best friend.

Remember how I repaired my daughter’s nightstand with it?  It’s magic when it comes to furniture repair.

Painting + Topcoat

As for the paint, I mixed the two colors and then thinned them with water so that the consistency would work well for spraying.  Here is a shot of the drawers.  Let me tell you, this paint dries crazy fast, which is nice, because you can get work done quickly, rather than sitting around watching it dry.   If you look closely, you can see that when it’s dry, it has a chalky finish to it.

Amy Howard One Step Paint

For the top coat on this piece, I decided to try General Finishes Flat Out Flat, as the guys at the Woodcraft store said it’s flatter than the “matte” finish of other polycrylics out there.

flat out flat

Oh. my. goodness.  I absolutely love the finish it gives.  It looks like it’s been buffed and polished, but I can spray it (which is a win-win) for me.

IMG_1457-wm

I gave the hardware a refresh with the help of some Rub ‘n Buff – love this stuff.  It seemed wrong to replace it with all new hardware, since it just needed a little love.

The Result

And here is the final finished look – I love it!

I ended up painting the top of this piece black, which gives it a bit of contrast.  And you can’t even see where the piece was repaired, can you?

Here you can see the process in motion – I’m thrilled with how this piece turned out and will be on the lookout for more pieces to transform!

I have talked a bit about spraying when I did my tutorial for painting kitchen cabinets, but haven’t talked about it when it comes to furniture. I have been thinking about it though, and will be putting something together soon. Ideas are swirling around in my head!

The flat out finish says you have to do three coats, lightly sanding between each. Do you do that when using Amy Howard?

Any progress on the spraying tips tutorial? I just sprayed a piece this weekend and was so disappointed at how bubbled the paint was. I had no control over the air and I felt like it made a mess of what could have been a smooth dresser. Sigh.

I’ve been so swamped I haven’t been able to take the time to test out the sprayers yet. What kind of sprayer did you use? What kind of paint did you use? How did you not have control of the air? Give me some more details and maybe I can help!

Used the Wagner Home Decor sprayer which does not allow for slower flow of air. I felt like the high volume of air was pushing my paint around too much and causing some of the bubbling. I used chalk paint but it was DIY (latex with calcium carbonate). It brushed on nicely but the sprayer was a disaster. Maybe I have the wrong sprayer?

Having control of the air flow is really important when it comes to painting. I’m always adjusting mine each time that I paint, and can’t imagine not being able to adjust that part of the equation! Being able to adjust the paint flow and the air is necessary since the paints/primers/stains I work with are all different consistencies. Can you adjust the paint flow at all?

I just used Amy Howard’s ballet white chalk paint on a desk. It already got marked by something blue. Is it necessary to protect the paint? How can it be expected to be effective furniture paint if it marks, just by putting a painted picture frame on it? It was so expensive, I can’t get over it.

I have a Titan Capspray HVLP sprayer – it’s overkill for a small project, but since I’m spraying so much, it was worth the investment. But I started out with a Wagner HVLP conversion gun, which hooked up to my air compressor and got the job done!

Do you use the spray to hide brush strokes or is there another reason? Do you think it’s worth it to buy a sprayer for just one piece of furniture? Also, do you know anything about Amy Howard clear wax? I’m assuming the “Flat out Flat” product that you put on must work better? Sorry for all of the questions! I have never done this before and I’m a teacher so am hoping to get it on the first try and not have to go back and buy more products 🙂 Thank you!

I really love the look of a sprayed finish, which is why I spray so often. I like using the Flat Out Flat because it gives a beautiful matte finish, and I can spray it! 🙂

For DIYers, you could start out with something like this – http://amzn.to/2ym4UzN (affiliate link). I just went industrial because I’m doing so much spraying now as part of my business. I did spray the entire piece – I love the smooth finish that you get with spraying. It just takes things to a whole new level. 🙂

I have LOTS of sprayers, my the main one I use is a commercial HVLP Titan Capspray 95. But I have used other sprayers that get the job done as a DIYer. I started out with an HVLP conversion gun that works very similarly to my current sprayer. I invested in a Festool orbital sander and dust extractor as well, since I’m doing more volume work. It was worth every penny! Here are some (affiliate) links:

I just shared a post about a sprayer that is perfect for the DIY’er who is just getting started with spraying. It’s SUPER easy to use, and I even sprayed a piece of furniture with it so you can see the results for yourself. Here is the link – https://evolutionofstyleblog.com/2018/02/paint-sprayer-made-simple.html. I’ve done a lot of spraying, so I feel pretty comfortable eyeballing the viscosity of the paint before I spray it. But I will say that I used the beginner level sprayer and sprayed it with paint both thinned and not thinned, and it worked beautifully!
