A Quick Powder Room Update

In the throes of my Kitchen Cabinet Makeover 2.0, my blogger holiday home tour, and my cookie exchange, I neglected to share the quick powder room update that I did the night before the cookie exchange.  Yes, the night before.  But friends, if you saw what I saw, you would have painted it too.  Suffice to say, teen boys use this bathroom, and it was bad.  I swear, at some point, we’re going to have to replace the toilets that the boys use regularly because boys are icky and they’re the reason we can’t have nice things.

Anyway…  The powder room is small, and is the only toilet in the basement, serving my oldest son’s room as well as any guests that may need to use it.  (Just to explain the set up down there, the powder room connects to a shower (behind the door) and the shower connects to another vanity/sink that is connected to my son’s room).  Does that make sense?  I had some leftover paint – Nightfall, a Benjamin Moore color – from painting the feature wall in the office area of my shop for photographing furniture.  I loved the dramatic look of the color, and I figured it would be perfect for this little powder room space.

Does this ring a bell?  It’s a super moody dark gray, but not quite black color

I had first seen this color in Kris’ office at Driven by Decor, and I loved it.  It plays beautifully, coupled with her pretty wood tones.  And it’s also a great backdrop for artwork (especially if you love contrast, like I do).

As a refresher, this powder room has been painted once already, but let’s go back to where it all began, shall we?  Kind of a poop brown, if we’re being honest.  And here you can see that the door from the powder room connects to the shower, which then connects to the other sink/vanity that adjoins my son’s room.

I painted it Mountain Laurel by Benjamin Moore, and it’s been a really good color for awhile now.  And really, the only thing that prompted me to paint was the fact that teen boys made it icky.

Plus, it works well with all of the existing colors in this little area.

Of course, I was motivated by the fact that I had this fun Christmas artwork, and I knew it would pop against the dark backdrop.

Do you like dramatic colors in powder rooms, or is it just me?  I think that this is one area of your home where you can take some risks and have a little fun!
