With spring just around the corner (God willing), I think people are getting in the mood to freshen up their homes in lots of different ways. I know I’m itching to clear out our garage and do some serious spring cleaning myself. I’m excited to share this complete kitchen refresh that I finished last month. It started out as a cabinet job, where they were going to also do their floors, but it ended up being a bigger makeover when they did countertops and a new backsplash too. You all know how much I love a complete kitchen refresh – those are my favorites.
The Before
It’s certainly not an “ugly” kitchen by any stretch. It’s just not the look that the homeowners wanted. They were looking to brighten things up in here, and had plans to update other elements of the kitchen as well – floors, and eventually counters and a new backsplash.
Adding Custom Molding
I’ve talked about adding molding to cabinets to give them a custom look, and I’m lucky to have found an amazing woodworker who does trim work on the side, and is willing to take on these jobs to add interesting detail to otherwise plastic-y looking islands and end cabinets. I can’t tell you how happy I am to refer him to my customers. Suffice to say, I’ve come across some flaky tradespeople who have been unreliable and/or super busy, so to find someone that does such great work, and is reliable is like finding a unicorn cavorting under a rainbow! See, he even caulks everything and fills the nail holes.
When it’s painted out – it looks like it was supposed to be there all along.

And here it is painted –
Cabinets Painted
When I finished my work, the floors weren’t in yet, and the homeowners decided to go all in and chose counters and a new backsplash that were yet to be installed as well. Even so, you can see how much lighter and brighter it’s looking, and the shiplap detail on the end cabinets really adds personality as well.
Here you can see that the shiplap wraps around the whole island.
The Final Reveal
The homeowners were kind enough to share photos of the kitchen with the floors, counters and backsplash installed. What a transformation.
I love that they went with some contrast on the backsplash. Isn’t it pretty? It works perfectly with the counters and the cabinets.
And here’s a side by side comparison so you can fully appreciate how far this kitchen has come!
