5 DIY Projects to do while Staying at Home

Today I’m talking about DIY projects to do at home while dealing with the Coronavirus. If you’re like much of the country, you might have kids home from school, you’re dealing with craziness at the grocery store, and perhaps you’ve been ordered to work from home.  My daughter is off school until mid-April, my boys are doing the remainder of their college semester online, and one of them was told they had to leave the dorms after spring break.  Good times.  So, in the interest of sanity and productivity, I was thinking about some home projects that you can tackle during this crazy time.  If you’re stuck at home, you might as well be productive, right?  This post contains some affiliate links.

Paint a Door

Yes, it’s a small and simple project.  But a painted door can brighten up and change a space in a big way.  I’ve painted our door to our garage a couple of times, and it’s one of those things that provides instant gratification.  Plus, it’s easy.  In fact, I might have to give our garage door another spruce up in the next couple of weeks.  If you’re saying, “Great idea Jenny, but I don’t have all of the supplies to do this.”  Call your local paint store and tell them what you need.  I am willing to bet they can rustle it up and have it ready for you.  Including mixing your paint ahead of time.  Or, place an order for supplies on Amazon, and have your local paint store mix up your paint.  This is one instance where time is on your side, right?

Paint a Piece of Furniture

If you’re like me, you probably have a piece of furniture that’s been sitting in your garage for two years that you’ve been wanting to paint.  What better time than the present?  If we can all walk away from this crisis with a stronger sense of cleanliness and a prettier home with some projects removed from our to-do list, that sounds like a win-win to me.  Painting a piece of furniture is also a great way to take your focus away from the stress of the world and focus in on the task at hand.  That’s why I love painting so much.

Continue on Your KonMari Journey

I jumped on the KonMari bandwagon after watching her Netflix show and reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.  I worked on my clothes, and books, but kind of pooped out after that.  However, I will say that my KonMaried drawers are still looking good!  So, maybe use this downtime with working on some organizing projects that are on your list.  You can check out my favorite organizing posts here if you need some more inspiration. 🙂

Give Your Floors a Deep Cleaning

We’re approaching Spring, and I know I always get the itch to do a deep clean as warm weather approaches, and flowers start to bloom.  If you really want to take things to the next level, check out this post on cleaning your tile and grout.  It’s a game changer.  And, it also works on carpet.

Tackle a Tile Project

Speaking of tile, why not tackle a DIY tile project in your home, since you’ll be there anyway…  This brick tile project was surprisingly simple, and way easier than I ever expected it to be.  And who doesn’t love brick?

Bake Some Bread

Ok, so this technically doesn’t count as a traditional DIY project, but more of a DIY baking project, right?  I’m doing this right now – baking some homemade bread.  I’m delaying going to the grocery store as long as possible, hoping that the pandemonium will settle and cooler heads will prevail.  A girl can hope, right?  So, in the meantime, this is a super easy, and delicious recipe from Scratch This With Sandy.

I know these times are tense and stressful.  Uncharted territory.  But try to keep some perspective, and use common sense in this process.  We’ll make it through – we always do.  In the meantime, tackle some of those projects at home while you’re dealing with the Coronavirus.  When else do you have this sort of time on your hands?

Stay safe.  Stay healthy.  Keep an eye on an elderly friend or neighbor.  Support local businesses by buying a gift card if you don’t want to visit in person.  Be kind to one another.

Thank you for such a level headed and inspiring post. Also, as the flus going around this year are upper respiratory then one would expect a run on tissues, chicken soup and decongestants, rather than the ubiquitous tp. Use bleach related products as this is a virus and not a bacteria. Keep a song in your heart and a gleam in your eye, after all we are honoring St. Pat and a smile on your face! Thanks for the dyi advice, always welcomed..good health to you and yours

The school district where I work has shut things down for the next 2 weeks. Today I cleaned the nasty tile floors in our home office after giving it a little facelift and put a new area rug down. I purchased an Oreck orbiter at your suggestion after reading your post on tile and grout cleaning. Typically I use an acid based cleaner but next time I will try the Sheiner’s. Next up: painting a little rattan table– a project I’ve been avoiding for some time! Hopefully the toilet paper will be back in stock soon.
