Friday 5+1 (5 Things I Love + 1 Thing I Don’t) – 6.15.18

Thanks to all of your prayers and well wishes for my son after his pick up truck accident last week.  Aside from a sore back, he seems to be healing with each passing day (thank God).  Last week was kind of a blur as a result, so this week I’ve been playing catch up, painting my heart out, working on kitchens.  At the same time, I’m looking at the calendar, amazed that school will be starting again in just TWO months!  I love summer so much, and I really want to enjoy every bit of it.  This post contains some affiliate links.

Making It

I spotted the trailer “Making It” on Facebook, and it’s a show of “my people”.  The premise is all around creative competition of people who are makers – artists, crafters, woodworkers, you name it!  Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman are the hosts, so already I’m in!  Interestingly, Amy is not at all crafty, while Nick appears to be quite knowledgeable and handy.  What a fresh take on competitive reality shows.

Making It Show

Sarah Off The Grid

One thing I miss about HGTV is all of the old school design shows, where designers take you through a room from start to finish, showing you the steps along the way.  Remember those?  Enough with all of the house flipping shows – give me some old school design shows again!  Sarah Richardson has always been one of my favorites, and she’s back with “Sarah Off The Grid”.  She’s building a home that is off the grid, but still high on style.  Set your DVRs my friends.

This is a nook off of the master bedroom.  So cozy and gorgeous – I don’t think I’d ever want to leave.

Annie Selke

I received the Annie Selke catalog in the mail this week, and immediately thought, these are my people.  The color palettes, the prints, the fabrics, the furniture – love it all.  Lots of gorgeous prints in shades of blue, including lots of navy.  And I have a feeling that after browsing the catalog, you’ll wish you had a beach house (with built-in bunk beds).

Blog Redesign

I can’t tell you what a long time coming my blog redesign and rebranding has been, but it’s finally done (well, still some tweaks to be made here and there anyway).  I’d love your feedback and ideas on things you’d like to see.

The Lakehouse

I just finished The Lakehouse this week, and while it was a long book (very descriptive and admittedly, a little slow to start), it was worth hanging in there and finishing it.  A great story, well developed characters, and twists that you don’t see coming.

An Amazon book description –

“Living on her family’s idyllic lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, inquisitive, innocent, and precociously talented sixteen-year-old who loves to write stories. But the mysteries she pens are no match for the one her family is about to endure…

One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest child, eleven-month-old Theo, has vanished without a trace. What follows is a tragedy that tears the family apart in ways they never imagined.

Decades later, Alice is living in London, having enjoyed a long successful career as an author. Theo’s case has never been solved, though Alice still harbors a suspicion as to the culprit. Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old estate—now crumbling and covered with vines, clearly abandoned long ago. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone…yet more present than ever.”

My +1 for the week – The Assault Fan Bike

A friend and I recently started doing some personal training sessions with my favorite workout instructor who pushes me like no one else ever has.  Example – yesterday we were working out and I said to her, “I hate you right now.”  She somehow brings something out in me that I can’t quite explain, and one of her torture methods is this Assault Fan Bike.

I know what you’re thinking.  Really?  That sweet, little innocuous bike?  Wrong.  It is the devil’s handiwork.  Try going full out on this thing for a minute or two, and tell me if you can breathe afterwards.

Assault Fan Bike

My first session with the trainer, she asked me if I had exercise induced asthma after working out on this thing.  And no, I don’t have exercise induced asthma.  But I felt like I did.  Actually, I felt like a contestant on “The Biggest Loser” when they did their first workout with the trainers and were falling off treadmills and puking.  And here I thought I was in pretty good shape.  She challenges me every single time, and I love/hate her for it every single time.

Have an awesome Father’s Day Weekend!

Jenny

I was so excited when I saw the new Sarah Richardson show being advertised on HGTV! I LOVE how she had her girls help design their bedrooms and bathrooms. And I totally agree on the design shows! I don’t watch HGTV much anymore because I’m not into flipping houses and they all seem to have the same style depending on which couple you watch. I’m not into farmhouse design so I am not into Fixer Upper at all, though my 9 year old daughter is. I miss the shows such as Design on a Dime, Decorating Cents, Room by Room, Designer’s Challenge, Dear Genevieve and I LOVED Sarah Richardson and Candice Olson.

I really miss Matt and Sheri, from Room by Room! And as a gardener, I miss Paul James, the Gardener Guy. I loved him. I stopped watching HGTV, it just seems so fake now. All the young couples, buying houses with budgets of half a million dollars. Give me a break. You know they are phony shows. Guess I’m showing my age.

yes!! my husband and i say that all the time!! everything on HGTV is about real estate now. let’s get back to design. remember that one 5 minute spot on decorating sense where a woman would rearrange a room using only what the home owner already had? and remember design on a dime????

I loved Design on a Dime! All of those decorating shows were sooo much better than what’s on now. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way – why aren’t they listening to us??
