Saturday 6+1 (6 Things I Love + 1 Thing I Don’t)

Happy Saturday friends!  We’re finally enjoying some spring weather, and it’s been long overdue to say the least.  I’m amazed at what warm weather and sunshine does for my mood and attitude.  Let’s get right to the Saturday 6+1!  This post contains some affiliate links.

The Fox Group

If you’re looking for some architectural eye candy, check out The Fox Group.  So much prettiness to choose from, in all sorts of styles.  Their portfolio will keep you browsing, I promise.

You’d never guess these rooms are in a tudor-style home.  No dark, heavy rooms here!

Or this traditional style home.  I love this bathroom – the tile work is so crisp and fresh.

And the kitchen – hello, gorgeous.

Fireplace Makeover

I’ve been working on a huge kitchen this week, and there is a lot of construction going on in the house, so I get to see things come together (that I don’t have to do), which is fun.  A carpenter was there working on the fireplace, and I managed to snap a couple of photos of the fireplace redo.  Definitely a more modern vibe, but very striking.

The Girl Who Came Home: A Novel of the Titanic

I think one of you all recommended this book to me, and I thank you for the recommendation!  This book is about the Titanic, and a group of people on board traveling from a small town in Ireland. Although it’s fiction, it could certainly be a true story as you read it.  I have always been fascinated by the story of Titanic, and remember taking the kids to see the Titanic Exhibit years ago at a museum in Columbus.  So many different stories from all walks of life.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette

Where’d You Go, Bernadette is a book that kept popping up in my “you might like this book list” and I finally listened to it.  I can’t quite describe it, but it’s quirky, funny, and leaves you wondering whether Bernadette is on the nutty side, or just a mom having to deal with life differently.  Here’s the Amazon excerpt:

“Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she’s a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she’s a disgrace; to design mavens, she’s a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette’s intensifying allergy to Seattle – and people in general – has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence – creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter’s role in an absurd world.”

I enjoyed it, and at some points in the book, I was laughing out loud.  A light(er) read compared to some that I’ve read recently, and one that kept me engaged.

Flex Tape

We discovered a pinhole leak in a pipe in our basement recently, and the way that the leak was positioned, water was spraying straight out in a fine mist.  This was one time where I was thankful we didn’t go away on vacation, as it could have been a huge mess, left unchecked for a week.  In a stop gap effort, I ran out and bought some Flex Tape, since the commercials show the guy taping off a boat, this will do the trick, right?

Let me preface this by saying that although  it didn’t completely seal off the leak, it bought us some time until the plumber could get here to fix it.  Fortunately, this pipe drained downward into a larger drainage area, and any trickles of water drained right out.

Hobby Lobby Papers

I spotted these papers awhile ago, and they caught my eye because they’re perfect for using to decorated the sides of drawers on a refinished dresser.  They’re a decent length, and the width is just right.

See how my friend Kayla used paper to add flair to her dresser?  I love this!

My +1 for the week – Prom-posals

Have you all seen this trend where young men do these dramatic gestures to ask the girls to dances these days?  What. is. this?  Call me crazy, but when I was in high school, I was happy to be asked to a dance.  Period.  End of story.  Prom-posals are setting the bar awfully high for eventual marriage proposals, don’t you think?  I mean, you can’t recycle a prom-posal as a marriage proposal.  That won’t sit well with the bride-to-be.  I’m pleased to report that my middle son (who is going to prom tonight), did NOT do a prom-posal, because he also thinks they’re silly.

Have an amazing weekend!

Your pipe issue is why we ALWAYS turn the water off when we leave on a trip. Glad you avoided a mess.

Our book club read Where’d you go Bernadette and LOVED it. There were times I literally laughed out loud. And yes, I am so thankful that for the most part when my girls were in high school the “prom posals” were simple and sweet. I remember our daughter telling us about the prom posals and mums done in Texas when she was at Baylor. Talk about over the top! No pressure.

I am with you on the prom-posals and over the top engagements. Let’s add gender reveal parties and diaper parties for the dads as well. Everything seems to be so over the top these days.

Oh my gosh – YES!!! The gender reveal parties are something I just don’t understand. But then, my gender reveal party was when my kids were born. 😉 We never found out what we were having in the first place – I like surprises. 🙂
