This is a large client kitchen with a twist – two toned cabinets. The homeowner has amazing taste, and has made changes to their home over the five years that they’ve lived there. The cabinets are another step in the process to the finished product. They already replaced the countertops and floors, and a new backsplash and cabinet hardware are in the works as well. I came in and painted the cabinets. The upper cabinets in Repose Gray and the lower cabinets in Gauntlet Gray (Sherwin Williams colors).
Before
As you can see, the kitchen is beautiful already, but they aren’t in keeping with her style, and they showed every speck of dust.
She has slowly been making over their home, putting her own stamp on it. As you can see through the kitchen in the photo below, there is a stunning built-in that they added, which is the same darker gray color that we used on the cabinets.
The countertops and the flooring were also replaced. The countertops are a gorgeous white and gray quartz.
They also have this lovely “drop zone” with glass cabinetry for display, and loads of addition storage. Let me just say, I want one of these.
Color Choices
For colors, the homeowner chose Repose Gray and Gauntlet Gray – both of them Sherwin Williams colors (color matched for Benjamin Moore’s Advance paint).

I have a question for the expert… What finish should I use for my cabinets, satin or semi gloss? I am thinking about using Sherwin Williams mindful gray for my cabinets and either dovetail or homburg gray for the cabinets on my island bar. I am looking for a contrats with a coordinating color and dovetail is on the same locator as mindful gray and I read that homburg gray is a coordinating color of mindful gray. I would love to hear what you think.

September 25, 2016 at 8:31 pmYes – the Repose Gray was on the top cabinets, with the Gauntlet Gray on the bottom. The only exception was in the oven area, since there was no place for a clean break in the upper and lower cabinets. In that area, we did all Gauntlet Gray. It’s really a gorgeous color combination!

January 21, 2018 at 11:50 amSimply Beautiful! Wondered if you prime cabinetry before painting with BM. I remodeled my kitchen– sanded, primed, cured, sanded high grit, then painted a dark espresso, sanded, painted, cured, for weeks-month before hanging. Every now and then I’ll get a Nick and ended up with base primer showing up. Have you ever just painted on a sanded wood surface (no prime)? Wondering what would happen?

Since you’ve used both colors, would you recommend using Repose Gray as the wall color and Gauntlet Gray for the kitchen cabinets? Wasn’t sure if they would look too muddy together or if there would be enough contrast. Would love your thoughts!
