Paint Color Poll – Cast Your Vote!

Hello!

I don’t know where this week is going – I feel like I’m in a bit of a fog.  I’ve been up at 4 AM the past two nights (and wasn’t able to fall back into a good sleep), so my eyes feel so tired that I just want to pop them out and let them rest on the counter.  I hate tired eyes.

However, before the tired eyes kicked in, I was making some great progress on this desk, from, um, forever ago.  See it in the back, partially stripped of it’s layers of paint only to be abandoned in my garage for over a year.

Here it is before I started working procrastinating on it.

I’m happy to report that I have actually made forward progress on this desk.  Who knew that the curves and details on this thing would be so maddening?

With the help of my Mirka dustless hand sander that I told you about here, I finally had a breakthrough in removing the layers of gunk.  Is it bad that I want a tricked out power sander for Christmas?

This is what progress looks like, people.

I’m finally getting to the good stuff now – painting!  Well, priming.  Close enough.  At least it’s not sanding.  I started with my old standby of Fresh Start primer by Benjamin Moore, but I was having problems with some of the wood grain bleeding through.  It’s kind of hard to tell in my not-so-blogworthy iPhone photo, but you can see some yellow patches if you look closely.

So, I had to pull out the big guns.

I try to avoid oil based products as much as possible, since they are such a nightmare when it comes to clean up, but there is a time and a season for them, and this is one of them.

The top drawer in this photo has been primed with Coverstain, the bottom one with the Fresh Start.

Now, I’m just kind of stuck on deciding what color to paint it!  I was thinking about staining the top and painting the bottom, but the top is going to have to be painted, because the wood is just in ugly shape.  I really don’t want to go with just plain white.  That seems like of boring.  Although at this point, I’m not even sure if this piece is going to work in my daughter’s room – the curves are tricky, and the girl is a borderline hoarder at times.  That said, I feel like I need to paint it a color that also appeals to the masses, should I choose to sell it.

Ok, it’s not a desk, but you get where I’m going here.  Yay or nay?

But then, I’ve always loved minty fresh painted furniture pieces…

I just love green in general.

I’m planning on changing the hardware too, but haven’t made any final decisions on it yet.  Maybe some nice contrasting glass knobs?  Or do I go more classic?  Weigh in, I’m all ears!

Just a suggestion…Zinzer comes in a spray and would give you a nice, brush free base on which to place the finish coats of paint. I just finished a table to use outside and/or as a potting table…for prep I washed it and sanded it (I wish I had your sander, maybe for Xmas 😉 ). Then I used BM porch and floor paint, Wheeling Neutral. Turned out great. But for your desk (and I love all your pics for inspiration) if you used chalk paint or milk paint the prep you did is overkill. But, if painting with BM or Farrow & Ball then you have to do all the prep. I would sand down the brush strokes Left when applying the Zinzer and then go with my top coats, unless there is a particular look you're after. I have a old parlor table that is sanded and ready to be finished, I just can't make up my mind, spray with Zinzer (purchased at Home Depot) and paint BM Putnam Ivory or chalk paint in a soft white with dark wax finish. I then have a bedroom set to tackle. Hope this helps you. Kate

What a gorgeous style, I love the curves! Before I vote, do you have a plan for where you'll be using it?

Hi!! I'm new to your blog, but I wanted to cast my vote. I LOVE the blue that dresser is painted. I think it is blue. The third example with the sold sign on it… Love your blog and all your ideas!! Have a great day and good luck.

I would go with a fun color, unless you want the ability to move it from one room to another in the future.

I did a desk like this once for my daughters room, in hot pink, and I love it. However, if it were going in a first floor room I would probably do the gray and white – I would love that. I'm sure whatever you do will be gorgeous 🙂

I love the mint or natural green colors. What a beautiful piece with great lines. Your hard work is all going to be worth it!
