Friday 5+1

Happy Friday!

Hope you’ve had a great week!  I’ve been busy working on the client kitchen that I discussed here, and it’s really taking shape.  I can’t wait to see it all pulled together.

I had my first 5+1 post (5 things I love + 1 thing I don’t) a few weeks ago, and I’m thinking about making this a more regular series.  It’s kind of fun to think about and pull together, and makes me stop and pay attention to the things around me.  So, here we go.

Old Photos
This weekend is my daughter’s first communion, and I had to share my grandma’s first communion photo.  She’s 92 years old, and I am lucky to still have her in my life.  I don’t know why she looks so ticked off, but I adore this photo and look at it every day.  If only we still had this gorgeous dress and veil!

Self-Tanner
As a former sun worshipper, I scorn myself for the way I treated my skin as a teen.  This is back in the days of baby oil, friends.  Anyone else in that generation?  While I don’t bake myself in the sun anymore, I still love the look of a nice tan.  Enter St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse.  This stuff is fantastic!  I picked up a trial bottle at Sephora for $10, and it really gives a great, natural color.

Another self-tanner fave of mine is Norvell’s Amber Sun Sunless Tanning Spray.  This is the same brand of spray tanner that is used at the salon where I have gotten a “professional” spray tan.  Great color right away, so you can see where you’ve sprayed, and it deepens as the day goes on.  Good stuff!

Hidden Hinges
I talked earlier this week about switching out exposed hinges for hidden ones.  I got the cabinet doors back from the woodworker who installed them for me, and I can tell already what a difference it’s going to make.

Navy Blue
I have always been a fan of navy blue (my bridesmaids dresses were even navy blue).  I think it’s such a classic color, and find myself drawn to it in so many ways – clothes, design, and of course, paint colors.  This navy exterior is so crisp, I can’t help but love it.  This exterior is Naval Blue by Sherwin Williams.

Therapy Dogs
We have a giant, 120 pound black lab rescue dog named Martin, who is about as mild and gentle as a dog can be.  (He was literally rescued from Doggie Death Row, within hours of being euthanized – I think he knows how good he has it).  Last weekend was opening day for my daughter’s softball season, and they had a huge ceremony with literally, 900+ kids in the league, along with parents, other kids and families participating.  It was a gorgeous day, so I brought Martin with me.  Can I just tell you what a people magnet this dog is?

People just loved him, and he is as sweet and patient as can be with kids and adults alike.  A sweet little girl, about 3 years old, with Downs Syndrome came over to pet him, was holding his face and nose, and he just took it all in.  I’ve been thinking about getting him trained to be a therapy dog, and I think this outing sealed the deal for me.  I think he would love it as much as those he visits.

Now for the one thing I don’t like right now – the last day of school.

Don’t get me wrong, I love summer and how fun and relaxing it is.  But lately, I’m noticing a bit of a sadness that comes over me as my kids complete another year of school.  Especially my oldest, who is finishing his freshman year of high school.  I’ve become acutely aware that our time with him at home is dwindling, and I get a lump in my throat just thinking about him leaving the nest.  I knew the high school years would go by at warp speed, but someone please slow down this ride.  I’m not ready to get off just yet!

I’m all ears with any suggestions from those of you who have been there, done that!

Oh my gosh! My daughter, an only child, is wrapping up her freshman year of high school too and I can't even tell you how anxious I am. I don't want her to leave home…ever! I'm kidding, but ouch. I get a lump in my throat when I think about it too! Hang in there.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone! I'm trying to live in the moment and not get too far ahead of myself, but it's so difficult. I'm hoping to lean on friends who have been through it to keep me from losing my mind!

We had a rescue dog too! They are the best and Martin looks so lovable! I understand your feelings with your oldest finishing up his year in high school. Today is the last day for regular classes for our middle daughter in college. Graduation is two weeks from today! And also, the last day of classes for our youngest daughter who is a Sophomore at the same university. Our oldest daughter is on her own already! I so understand how you feel! Having been there and done that, I can tell you that there is so much more for you to enjoy down the road. Enjoy every moment of your children while they are still home, but I can say, you will love the moments they come home while they are in college, and so will they. They will openly tell you how they have missed family dinners, sleeping in their own bed, their room, and they will wake up early to join you for breakfast and tell you how much they miss being around you – even though they are happy with school and being away. These are some of the best moments you have to look forward to.

Thanks Genny – this is very reassuring! It's just amazing to me how quickly the time has passed, and how much faster it goes by as they grow older. I don't remember reading about all of this in the parenting brochures… 😉

I bet Martin would make a wonderful therapy dog! Keep us posted on his training. I'd love to read about that. 🙂 My youngest is a freshman in high school now too. My oldest is a sophomore in college. Time really does fly! I remember their first day of kindergarten like it was yesterday! 🙂

My daughter is in the last two weeks of her high school career. My, where has the time gone?! In some ways I am so excited for her to begin a new chapter in her life…college, perhaps romance and a family…but so sad that such a special chapter in my life is coming to a close. However, the thought of having a grown child who can take care of herself and support herself makes me happy in that I know I raised her right, and believe it or not, I somehow am ready for her to move forward with her life. I think you will be surprised that when it's time for your son to move on, you will be ready too. Right now, just keep raising him right and loving him every chance you get!

Jenny, I feel exactly the same about my son (a freshman too) it makes me tear up every time I think about it and how little time we have left with him at home. And, he's an only child, so I have no 'backups' to keep me busy once he's gone. Several of my friends had a hard time adjusting but they made it through and life is good…just different. 🙂

What a sweet post Jenny! I can relate to the end of school too. It seems like yesterday she started the 4th grade and pretty soon she'll be a 5th grader (sniff). It's so hard watching our babies grow up so fast. What a sweet dog you have and I think that is such a wonderful idea. xo

Oh how I wish I knew a way to slow down the passage of time too! Please let me know if you figure it out!! My only child will be a Senior next year and then going off to college 2 hours away from home. It seems like he was just starting Kindergarten the other day, but all of a sudden he's driving and going out with friends and just heading towards becoming his own, adult person. He just found out that he will be the Drum Major of the marching band next year, so he will have a very busy Senior year and I'll get to see even less of him than I already do. When he leaves for college, I'm going to try my best to not be like one of those creepy moms from the weird Old Spice commercials LOL, but I don't know…

"I'm noticing a bit of a sadness that comes over me as my kids complete another year of school." – Don't be. That's just another phase of their becoming and growth, and it's all thanks to you. Help them in every step of the way, and always guide them with much introspection and patience. Most importantly, you should assure them that they will get to whatever college they might choose to enroll in, sometime in the future. Thanks for sharing that!
