How I Started Stripping

Hello friends,

My daughter came home “sick” from school on Monday (I think she was suffering from a Daylight Savings Time hangover, and perhaps a little hungry, no real sickness to speak of), so she was parked on the couch, watching movies.  Normally, I listen to the radio during the day, and didn’t want to compete with the TV – so I decided to start stripping.  Wallpaper, that is. 😉

That seems to be how some projects get started around here – on a whim.  Granted, this is a project that I’ve had on my “to do” list since we first bought our home in 2010.  But after taking down wallpaper in our powder room, dining room and in my husband’s office, I am a weary wallpaper remover.  And this space is probably going to be my biggest challenge – lots of corners and nooks and crannies to deal with in here.

Yes, the wallpaper carries into the toilet area too.  The only thing worse than removing wallpaper, is removing it in cramped quarters.

In my haste, I started removing wallpaper before taking proper “before” photos of the entire space.

By the end of the afternoon, you could see the progress.

It’s slow and tedious, to say the least.

My biggest dilemma is the direction to take with the color (whenever I actually get to the painting stage, that is).  I guess with my wallpaper removal pace, I’ll have plenty of time to mull that over.

This is another one of those “Love the One You’re With” decorating situations.  Although I’m not a big fan of the tile in here, we’re not going to go to the time and expense of removing and replacing it.  So, I have to work with it.

Let’s take a closer look –

I do like the mosaic tile that is used in some parts of the master bathroom.  This is a shot of the shower floor.

Here is a shot of how it’s used around the tub.

And our space age shower:

Not what I would have designed if I built this house, but I do love the size of the shower in here.

I have been mulling over color options for awhile now, and as much as I love all of the beautiful grays that are out there, I don’t know if I can make that work with this tile.  However, I don’t know that I want to go with a shade of beige that would better match the tile either.  I don’t think I want a Sea of Beige.

So I’m thinking of something more along the lines of a contrasting color.

Although this is pretty sharp looking:

Here is a grayish wall color with beige tile.  Perhaps there is hope to go in a gray direction…

Can you see why I’m torn and confused on which direction to take?

The jury is still out on whether or not I should paint the cabinets.  When I see photos like this, I think, “Yes, I should paint them.”  And I’m totally in love with the center cabinet and sconces in this bathroom.

Love.

But then, I’m also drawn to stained or dark painted cabinets too.

What do you think?  I guess I’ll have plenty of time to mull things over while I’m tearing down wallpaper, right?

Yes, that's a tough one. I like the dark gray/green color in your inspiration pics. You have way more patience than me girl! And that is some kind of shower. You could have a party in there.

The shower itself is great – the space age style, not so much. Did you notice this is one of the only rooms in my house that has been untouched? This is precisely the reason – wallpaper is my nemesis.

I feel your pain my friend! Stripping the wallpaper in our powder room is one of the next projects on my agenda and I can't tell you how much I'm dreading it! I love your idea of a gray with that tile. In our old house, I painted a light beige with similar color tile and was never happy with it. I also love white walls in a bathroom!

I think bathrooms are the worst rooms of all when it comes to painting/de-wallpapering/etc.. Give me a big room with four blank walls, and I'm a happy camper! I'm really starting to think that I should move in the direction of some shade of white – the trick will be finding the right one!

I bet it feels so light and bright in there having that paper off! Stripping wallpaper and furniture are definitely my top two least favorite jobs. Have you thought about a warm creamy white, something like Navajo White? Just a thought.

It's definitely much lighter and brighter in there with the wallpaper down! There's just so. much. of. it. I think we should all put our heads together and come up with a product that makes the wallpaper just melt off the walls. We could be millionaires!

Definitely looking at white as an option. Navajo is a beauty!

I think a warm grey with some green tones would look great in there. I've been trying out samples from the BM color charts and those from OC-45 to OC-52 might work in your space. PS I hate removing wallpaper!

Great colors you're recommending there! I have a feeling I'm going to have A LOT of samples on the walls! Removing wallpaper ranks up there on one of my least favorite DIY-related tasks! Whoever comes up with a product to make it easier will make millions! I'm not talking about wallpaper strippers and such – something that REALLY makes it just slide off the walls would be heavenly!

Isn't wallpaper the worst? At my parents' house, the previous owners didn't prime the walls first, they just glued it right onto the drywall. Which means that my mom couldn't get the paper off and had to eventually paint over it. At least yours is coming down, haha.

I like the gray with your tile the best. We're in a "make it work" situation with our bathroom tile, too. It's not horrible, but just not what we would've picked.

Oh my gosh, that sounds terrible! In my husband's office, I think it would have been easier to re-drywall the wallpapered areas, the walls were so terrible. My least favorite DIY task, by far!

I have the same problem! The previous homeowners left us with a similar color scheme with regards to tile. I go back and forth between staining the cabinets dark or painting them white. I feel paralyzed to make a decision. I can't wait to see what you do…maybe it will inspire me to get off the fence!

That's exactly where I've been with this bathroom! I guess that's why I haven't touched it until now. I definitely need a plan, and I'm hoping once the wallpaper comes down, I'll have a better feel for how I want it all to come together. Fingers crossed. 🙂

Oh this is such an exciting project!!!!! Yay!! I love your inspiration pictures and know you will make the tile work in your favor. I just stripped wallpaper in a tiny bathroom and mudroom and it was NOT fun…..so good for you for tackling that and getting it done!

Your post has a very witty title! It’s funny how you chose to have picked that up. Anyway, the hue that you were thinking about of choosing to be applied next as your wallpaper is awesome! It is neutral, warm, and pleasing to the eyes. You have such good choice in styling, and I hope to read more from you. Take care!
