Bold Basement Color

Hello!

I hope you’re all having a great week!  With it so uber-hot around here, it leaves me wanting to curl up in a cool and comfy corner.  And where would that be?  The Basement.

Now, I’m not talking scary-cellar basements.  Think luxe, sit-and-stay-awhile basements.  I have shown you my basement space here and here, and I’ve been doing some more work to make it mine (ok, who am I kidding, my boys get the most use out of this space).  But, it’s coming along.

I blogged about some great color palette ideas from Sherwin Williams that I have been using as a starting point for this space.  A refresher…

I have already used Ethereal Mood on the walls going down the stairs to the basement and along my board and batten wall near the bar area (of which I apparently have no recent pictures to share).  But here is the stairway…

We have a media area that is great for watching sports (go Reds!) or for cozying up for a family movie night.  It’s a separate area, without being completely closed off from the rest of the basement, which I love.  I just haven’t been too jazzed by the baby-poo colored walls down there.

So, I’m drawing inspiration from my HGTV color palette, and some great photos that I found burning hours of time that could  be used in other productive ways online.

Since our media space is a big gaming/movie/sports watching area, I decided to take a gamble and go dark.  I was originally planning on going with the Sherwin Williams color, Riverway, in the HGTV color palette.  But then I pulled out my trusty Aegean Teal (Benjamin Moore) that I just used to paint the back of my bookcases, and decided it was a close enough match to carry that beautiful bold color downstairs.

Here is a sneak peek of my progress so far.  Don’t judge – it’s a sneak peek/temporary disaster zone, and it was dark outside.   I will say my 13 year-old son gave it a thumbs up, because it’s nice and dark – “perfect for playing video games.”  While my goal wasn’t to increase my son’s screen time, I’m happy he likes it.

My only dilemma is that I’m not quite sure how to deal with the area around the big screen.  There are all sorts of panels surrounding it (some is for storage, some is just there, with no real purpose), and with the baby-poo color, they kind of blend in, which is nice.  But, I don’t think I want to leave it the current color.

What do you think?  Do I continue with the basement boldness?

Yes, most definitely continue with the basement boldness! I would paint around the T.V. area too…can you paint the panels too – with something other than baby poo colors…maybe the exact same color…so they will really blend in?!? Can't wait for your finished product!

Can the panels be wrapped with fabric that coordinates with the new paint color?!! That would make an awesome, bold statement!

I like the wall color! I would paint the panels either white like the trim or the color of the walls so they sort of go away. Depends on whether you want that to be featured or to just go away. Maybe throw some knobs on the panels so they look like built-ins?

Love the new wall color! What about making them all look like cabinets? Even the non-functional ones… painting them the same color and adding hardware to make it look like a unit.

Nice post! Love how the paint adds some color without making it too dark. Do the panels serve any function? I would try to remove them or paint them the same color so the blend into the wall. I like the idea that the other commenters have had about making them loo like built-ins. It would be really nice if they were actually usable storage.

I love the blue! It looks awesome. I would paint the panels either white {to stand out}or blue {to blend in}. You're lucky to have such a great basement!

Love it. Our basement is BM woodstock tan, BM duxbury gray and trim of Lenox Tan. I love that it is dark and warm. BTW…love the aegean teal here. I'm going to go with it in my dining room.

Oooo now see I'm jealous of your media room in the basement. We are now even in our coveting. Ha! I love that color, gorgeous!! Maybe just keep on using it for the cabinets since it is "perfect for video games." My 12 year old son would agree.
